The 2024 Africa Meeting of the Econometric Society (AFES 2024) will be hosted by Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire) from June 5-8, 2024.
The conference will be preceded by the Africa Summer School in Econometrics (ASSE 2024).

ES Africa Regional Standing Committee Activities
The ES Africa Regional Standing Committee will organize two mentoring events at the AFES 2024:
(1) an Editor’s panel which will allow participants to ask questions about the publication process at various journals,
(2) an early-career mentoring event which will provide participants an opportunity to connect with more senior members of the profession.
Financial Support
Financial Support will be available to young researchers from Africa who wish to present papers during the conference. The allocation of the grants will be on a competitive basis. The grants will partially cover travel and accommodation expenses for onsite participants. Applications should be done at the time of paper submission.
Econometric Society Africa Region’s Young Economist Best Paper Award
A competition for the best paper from young economists is open for papers presented in the contributed sessions at the conference by young scholars. The main target of the award is young scholars from underfunded institutions especially Africa based young scholars. For co-authored papers, the program committee will ensure that the candidate is the major contributor to the paper. The price will consist of 500 USD minimum.

The Meeting and the Summer School will take place on ENSEA campus in Abidjan. The Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA) is located in the Municipality of Cocody, on Avenue des Grandes Ecoles.

The means of transport to get there and around the city are:
- Private car hire companies (Yango, Uber, Heetch) : These methods are strongly recommended to participants during the two events. Participants are advised to download these applications in advance.
- Inter-municipality taxicabs (of Orange and White & Orange colour).
For participants staying in the recommended hotels, a shuttle bus will provide transport from the hotels to the meeting site in the morning, and from the said site to the various hotels at the end of the day. Transport during the day is the responsibility of each participant.

AFRICA SUMMER SCHOOL IN ECONOMETRICS (ASSE) 2024: In conjunction with the Conference, the 2024 edition of the Africa Summer School in Econometrics will be organised by ENSEA from 30 May to 4 June 2024. Financial Support:
Young African researchers wishing to present papers at the conference are eligible for financial support. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. The grants will cover part of the travel and accommodation costs of participants on site.
Applications must be sent to afes2024@ensea.ed.ci no later than 12 March 2024 and must be supported by the applicant’s CV.
Selected applicants will be contacted no later than 22 March 2024.

Participants who will not be submitting papers will be able to register at the beginning of January and those who will be submitting papers will be able to register directly after receiving notification of their papers status.
Papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format. Each person may submit and present only one paper; however, each person may be a co-author of several papers submitted to the conference. The presenting author must be a member of the Econometric Society and all participants must register for the conference.

Visa
All participants coming from countries where there is an embassy of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire are strongly encouraged to obtain their visa in their country before departure. If not, they may apply for your visa online (Contact e-visa airport: (00225) 05 54 36 29 15 available 24 hours a day –
After registering and paying the fee online, a biometric e-visa is issued on arrival at Abidjan international airport. The visa is valid for 1 to 3 months.
Participants arriving in Côte d’Ivoire must go through the usual police and customs formalities. In addition to travel documents (passport, visa or identity card for nationals of WAEMU countries), you must have your vaccination record with you. Only the yellow fever vaccine is compulsory. NB: Participants must have the Meeting invitation letter with them.

Means of transport: For any other travels, you can hail the orange/red-colored taxicab or any other private Passenger Car with Driver (VTCs) such as Uber, Yango or Heetch.
Conference venue: The Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA) in Abidjan is located in Cocody, Avenue des Grandes Ecoles. During the conference, an ENSEA bus will provide transport from Hotel-ENSEA-Hotel (Departure from hotel: from 7.30 am – Departure from ENSEA: 6.30 pm).
Language: The Conference will be conducted in French and English.
Communication: Communications at the hotel are relatively expensive. You can also buy a local chip for 500 FCFA or 1,000 F CFA depending on the operator (see stand at the airport). Telephone operators offer mobile and/or data packages.

Currency: The local currency is the CFA Franc (1 Euro = 655.957 F CFA). International credit cards are accepted at most banks in Abidjan. 24-hour cash ATM are readily available in the city. Traveller’s cheques are accepted by the main banks in Abidjan.
Health: The ENSEA infirmary will be available to administer first aid in the event of illness.
Climate and local time:
Local time: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
Climate: The rainy season lasts from May to July and the short rainy season from October to November. The climate is pleasant but humid.
The climate is sub-equatorial, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, high humidity (80-90%) and abundant rainfall, reaching 1,766 mm3 in Abidjan. This zone has two dry seasons and two wet seasons. The long, hot dry season is interspersed with a few rains and extends from December to April. The short dry season lasts from August to September.

The African Summer School in Econometrics (ASSE) 2024 will cover the following topics:
Topic 1: Foundation of Machine Learning and its applications to applied economics

The course will revisit topics in foundational machine learning techniques and their application to adaptive field experiment, online learning and active learning, online convex optimization and bandit problems.
Topic 2: The role of technology for the structural transformation of Sub-Saharan Africa
Instructor: Tavneet Suri, MIT Sloan School of Management
The course will review the new and emerging literature on the role of technology for the structural transformation of Sub-Saharan African countries: agriculture technology, mobile money, digital loans, etc.
Topic 3. Business cycle: sources of persistent changes in the output gap and unemployment rate
Instructor: James Morley, University of Sydney, Australia.
The course will revisit recent statistical techniques used to gain insights into a number of empirical issues in economics, including: the nature of business cycle, structural changes in macroeconomic relations, or persistence in unemployment rates.
Topic 4. Semiparametric estimation for structural parameters in policy evaluation
Instructor: Sami Stouli, Department of Economics, University of Bristol
The course will review recent semiparametric estimation techniques for the estimation of structural parameters in policy evaluation: estimation with control variables, quantile and distribution regressions.
Topic 5. Recent advances in Prediction with structural models
Instructor: Marco Del Negro, Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The course will review recent statistical techniques used to gain insights into several topics related to time series analysis including forecasting models in the presence of non-stationarities caused by instabilities and robust Bayesian analysis.
