In the framework of the “Development Methodologies” Chair held by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, a summer school for African researchers and decision-makers will be organised from 5 to 8 July 2022 in Abidjan, on the campus of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA).
Following the “Innovations for Development” summer school of 2021, this new edition will be organised in partnership by the French Development Agency, the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Laboratory (J-PAL), the Innovation for Development Fund and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Statistique et d’Economie Appliquée (ENSEA). It will be moderated by renowned researchers affiliated with the J-PAL network, including Esther Duflo, Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), co-founder of J-PAL and winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics.
Participants
The summer school will bring together two groups of participants:
- An audience of researchers who have demonstrated an interest and capacity to incorporate impact evaluation methods into their research work ;
- An audience of African policy makers involved in either commissioning rigorous evaluations or applying evidence to guide public decision-making.
Format
The Summer School will offer two teaching modules to meet the needs and interests of both groups of participants:
- An academic module aimed at strengthening the knowledge and good practice of participants already familiar with the methodological foundations of impact assessment;
- A policy module to illustrate the role of impact assessment in evidence-based public policy design. This module will consist of two days of lectures that will illustrate the process from evidence generation to policy adoption.
These two modules will be complemented by joint sessions bringing together the two groups of participants, to facilitate exchanges between researchers and policy makers around practical cases.
